Cid LuniusRocks on  The Rising Of The Shield Hero
So. Gonna go on a rant here. TL;DR: This is worth reading, because it respects it's own setting, characters, themes, gives a very human feeling to both protagonists, supporting cast and antagonists and really drives in the joy of an adventure, mystery and a struggle.

This is a very divisive Isekai, because the first long story arc actively mocks everything modern mass produced Isekai stands for: a protagonist that's uninteresting but powerful, every girl likes the protagonist for shallow reasons, there's no heroism, there's no mystery, the protagonist is somehow "ultra smart", the reality is everyone else around them is stupid (the author writes them ignorant), it's all just "look I'm so powerful and edgy".

The story is willing to take knocks against popular Isekai archetypes through it's four heroes and prove how each has simpleminded approaches that cause more harm than good,it creates a genuinely vile and despicable female antagonist and then eventually gives her retribution.

It's by no means perfect in it's portrayal of a protagonist that gets tired of everyone's agendas and starts playing by his own rules, you see him fall hard and then the supporting cast humanizes him again, even one time adventures show growth, more mental than just raw power. The story delves into the rules of it's powers and systems, it gives you enough to think on and theorize, it makes you realize, all four cardinal heroes could be on the same level and all they'd need is a change in mind set.

That's where the story truly shines and takes hold, it has good battles and beautiful moments and panels, but it's describing a story of mindset, of sticking to morals and developing a characters personality through hardship.

You see everyone grow, not just the titular hero, not just the main cast. Though I'll admit that the series never really recaptures that feeling of being the underdog and the daily struggle,it does justice to the character by making the main cast mature.

Does it still fall on some tropes? Yeah and they make fun of it too, but it's never been a read that overstays it's welcome.

It's got good humor, fantastic drama, great storytelling, amazing world building and it never feels like it rests on it's laurels for too long, it's always looking to entertain you and show you more interesting bits of it's setting. It's definitely worth reading.

It's so good, I had to reply to myself.

I'll try to leave a review.
People that ship and mention s** in every comment are gross.
GL/BL stories make this website worse than it should be.
